Animal Welfare League Australia (AWLA) officially launches Monday 1 September
Issued: 26.8.08
The Animal Welfare League of Queensland cares for over 12,000 strayed and abandoned cats and dogs a year in the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. This September, the AWL Qld will join hands with AWL’s throughout Australia to form the national body, Animal Welfare League Australia (AWLA).
The AWLA seeks to be recognised as the peak companion animal welfare organisation in Australia, providing information and research on important animal welfare issues to the Federal, State and Local Governments as well as the pet industry.
With combined experience of over 200 years, the member organisations have cared for millions of animals, providing veterinary care when owners cannot afford treatment for their pets, emotional care, food, shelter and rehoming cats and dogs when they have been abandoned.
There are nine shelters operating across Australia with over 20,000 animals saved and rehomed each year.
AWLA will exist to uphold and promote the welfare of companion animals and to facilitate animal/human relationships.
