What we do
Our mission statement is to:
Uphold and promote the welfare of companion animals and to facilitate animal/human relationships.
Our role is to:
Continue to work closely with organisations and departments that are concerned with companion animal welfare and to develop those relationships
Encourage the exchange and advancement of knowledge and information on companion animal welfare and to develop and promote consistent standards and guidelines for the care and treatment of companion animals
Liaise with Government, regulatory bodies, private and public sectors and the general public to promote awareness of companion animal welfare issues and to help improve practices
Raise community awareness on companion animal welfare through the media, schools, corporate organisations and any other appropriate means
In practical terms we rehome around 30,000 animals every year. Each State organisation operates to the highest standards of care with teams of staff and volunteers working hard to find good homes for the animals that find themselves under the guardianship of the Animal Welfare League Australia.
Our shelter-staff practice pre-adoptive training and our staff and volunteers deliver enrichment programs to reduce the stress animals can inevitably face when coming into a shelter environment. We have extensive fostering programs, with our dedicated teams of volunteers providing loving homes on a temporary basis until new permanent homes can be found. And we provide legacy programs that can ensure much loved family pets continue to be cared for after their owners have gone.
We also provide low cost veterinary care and desexing services so that every owner has a chance to care for their animals, regardless of circumstance, and emergency boarding services for the animals of people in need.
In addition to providing these practical services to animals in need, we also work hard to promote the messages of responsible pet ownership with activities such as education programs and awareness raising campaigns, and liaise closely with relevant Government bodies to advise on and improve the standards of companion animal welfare.
